Buttermilk & Chive
Corrine Latta
Marshall County, Alabama
Corrine keeps three cows and gives away more buttermilk than she sells. The chives grow in a coffee can on her porch rail.
- creamy
- garden lettuce
- cold tomatoes
Small-batch dressings, vinaigrettes, and marinades made with fresh herbs and good vinegar. Expect buttermilk ranch, pepper jelly vinaigrette, and comeback sauce worth keeping in the door of the icebox. Nothing here tastes like the grocery shelf.
Before dressing came in plastic bottles, it came in whatever jar was clean. A little vinegar, a little sweet, whatever herb was growing by the back steps. These makers still shake theirs by hand.

Off the shelf, down the road
There's more than what hangs in the DressingBarn — pick a state and go treasure hunting through hand-checked makers down the road and a county or two over.

Hollis Farmstead
Rockingham County, Virginia
Poured warm over wilted spring greens, the way the Hollis women have done since the valley was mostly orchard.

Ruthelle Sanders
Hinds County, Mississippi
Named for what folks said on their way out the door. Ruthelle learned it from a café cook who never measured a thing.
